This is the third volume of a series of posts describing the difficulty in finding an appropriate card for a friend that is on death row.
This volume…his birthday…
On my way to the store, I thought that this occassion should be an easy one to find an appropriate card as I can surely find a very generic birthday card…
Well, I entered the Hallmark card section, and the first birthday card that I noticed literally had a picture of a prison cell on it…
It read…
“Being known as the ‘fun one’ of the group is a good thing. Unless you’re in prison. Happy Birthday. Avoid prison.”
Seriously. And no, I did not buy this one.
I eventually found one that simply stated, “Happy Birthday to you.”
Inside, I felt myself starting to write a very traditional “Wishing you a very happy birthday and many many more.” I stopped before the many more part as in his last letter he wrote about a fellow inmate that was getting his sentence commuted down from death row to life and he said that “this would be like death to me”.
